Classics

As choristers, pupils sing in Latin every day, and quickly develop a feel for the language. They start formal Latin lessons in Form III, and they enjoy making links with the music they sing, and with other languages. Latin allows them to learn about the way language works, the etymology of words, and to develop techniques of precision and focus in learning.

Classes largely follow the Common Entrance Syllabus, and our exceptionally small class sizes allow each boy to move at a fairly individualised pace. Boys can be prepared for appropriate school scholarship examinations or sit Common Entrance at either Level 3 or 2, according to ability. From Form V, more able boys may be introduced to Greek. They will sit Common Entrance at Level 1, or, where a boy is exceptionally keen and able, Level 2.

All boys leave WACS with a very good foundation in Classics, and, most importantly, seem to really enjoy it; many choose to continue with classical subjects at their next school and beyond.

Although Classics’ classes are largely language-based, as many opportunities are taken as possible to introduce the boys to the broader classical world. We are able to take advantage of our Central London location to visit local Roman landmarks such as the Temple of Mithras, and exhibitions at the British Museum. After Common Entrance the Form V boys follow a programme designed to introduce them to the history of writing and language more generally, which is hugely popular.
